Satanic Civil Rights

Satanists recognize that, in nature, equality is a myth. Belief in this utopian pipe-dream out in the wild can quickly result in deadly consequences. We recognize that the lion cannot lie down with the lamb, unless the former is gorging himself upon the latter. In the wild, rights are dictated by individual capabilities, and no two animals—even of the same species—are alike, and we must not forget that man is just another animal. This simple fact is detrimental to survival and cannot be ignored.
In today’s society, mainstream religion and politically correct though both try to impose the ludicrous believe that everyone is born equal. To fall victim to this mode of thought is to believe that every person is born with the exact level of competence, physical attributes, creativity, et cetera. If such were the case, there would be no such thing as humans preying on one another, no history of slavery, no need for educational exams, no different tax brackets, no societal classes. Of course the religionists want the masses to believe in this egalitarianism, because it makes them easier to control if everyone conforms to the lowest common denominator, and one the lowest common denominator is viewed as the norm, no one asks any questions and the sheep are easily fleeced.
The media, government, and other agencies also recognize this and use it to their advantage, which is why television today is so saturated with reality shows filled with the lowest sorts of human scum. Viewers of these programs begin to view their “stars” as idols and role models to be emulated, so they buy what they see those people buying, speak in the way their idols speak, and eventually lower their standards until everyone is alike and at the bottom, with no one thinking for his or her self. At this point, stupidity becoming the norm, the media uses these celebrities to sell products and ideas to the unthinking rubes; the government has an unlimited supply on worker bees who will break their backs to make a living without questioning why the minimum wage is usually lower than the living wage, why our citizens are sent to wars they have nothing to do with, or why the country keeps sinking further into debt as we aide other countries and allow our own citizens to live in squalor.
In the wild, consistently lowing the bar in this way quickly kills off the best and the brightest, weakening the group as a whole. The same applies to what is happening in America today. The best and brightest are now fewer and farther between, despite access to information being easier than ever with the advent of the internet and technological exponential growth. Young people have a general sense of apathy, and the ones who care about anything at all are the dupes who only care than no one be offended or made uncomfortable by pointing out the fact that everyone is different and not born equal. This is not a victim culture, and victims always perish.
The only rights that exist in nature are those that one makes for himself. The idea of “God-given” rights is a ploy to make the less competent feel entitled. It is a child’s blanket, in that it gives people a false sense of security or importance—until someone stronger or more clever comes by and takes advantage of them. Yet, even then they cry victim and claim their God-given right was violated. There are no God-given rights in nature. The owl will not justify his killing and eating the mouse to the mouse’s family as being his God-given right. He will eat it because he can—because he made his own right by being bigger and swifter. Social animals create for intricate rights, as we see with packs of wolves, lion prides, and in humanity.
In order for humanity to exist, we have created our own social compact; a sometimes unsaid agreement between a group of people that dictates what is and is not okay based on the needs and welfare of the group as a whole. It is a necessary collectivism used as a strategy for survival. A human infant cannot provide food for, or defend, itself, so it relies on its parents. A mother would stay with her child while its father went out to provide food for them all. Humans, being opportunists, will almost always take advantage of the defenseless, so people found it easier to form tribes. Safety in numbers. For these people to even get along productively there needed to arise the social compact, lest the group or tribe destroy itself through internal betrayal and in-fighting. They needed to understand what was okay and what was not, thus the creation of the first laws and rights. To live in a civilized structure, civil rights were created, though they may not have been recognized as such for quite some time and would evolve throughout history, as humanity and civilization evolved.
Fast-forwarding a few thousand or more years to today, in the last hundred years we have seen civil rights grow into a movement. Blacks and whites mix, women can vote, homosexuals have the same legal standing as heterosexuals and can marry in several states, people can choose to practice whatever religion they wish—or none at all. These are all civil rights based on the idea that all people in America are equal in the eyes of the law—not by birth or anyone’s particular idea of a deity. These rights were fought for and won in courtrooms, whereas, civil rights in the past were won by revolutionaries on the battlefield.
As Satanists in America, we understand that mainstream religion would have us wiped out given the chance. This is why it is important for us to understand the U.S. Constitution; the First and Fourteenth Amendments, in particular. It is also why we must remain vigilant in our standing on Point 3 of Doktor LaVey’s Pentagonal Revisionism. The First Amendment guarantees us the freedom to pick any or no religion, and establishes the wall of separation between church and state. It also guarantees that the government cannot make laws as to exactly what constitutes something as being a legitimate religion. The Fourteenth Amendment guarantees that no state can pass laws that infringe on the liberties previously described. This means that no matter where you live in America, you have the legal right to practice Satanism as your religion and no one can legally discriminate against you for it. No police agency can search your home simply because you’re a Satanist and they think that’s reason enough. In the eyes of the law, all religions have exactly the same rights, so if a student in public high school can wear a crucifix, another has the same right to wear a Sigil of Baphomet. If the Koran, Torah, and Holy Bible are allowed to be read by students in public school, so are The Satanic Bible and The Satanic Scriptures. I use the school example because of a 2002 case I was involved in where a Hawai’i public high school (I was working for the Department of Education at the time) has Satanism listed in its student dress code under contrabands, next to drug paraphernalia and gang insignia. Needless to say, they removed Satanism from the “banned” list the same day, thanks to the existence of the First and Fourteenth Amendments.
The previous example should not be misconstrued to mean that Satanists wish to publicly display our religious iconography on any state or federal land, as Christians and Muslims so often seek to do. On the contrary. We believe that it is better that these places remain completely secular and free of any and all religious displays. We aren’t out to proselytize, convert or in any other way force Satanism on anyone. We simply refuse to be brushed aside, or worse yet, treated as criminals, because of our religion. In his definitive essay on the topic, Let’s You and Him Fight, Church of Satan High Priest, Magus Peter H. Gilmore, makes this excellent statement:
“Thus we do not endorse the idea of putting Satanic monuments, texts or images in public spaces. Rather than allowing a hodgepodge of competing theologies, most of which misrepresent fundamental American principles, we prefer that no religious iconography be used in these arenas. We have plenty of literature crafted by our Founding Fathers which accurately represents the conceptual foundations of the United States, and these are thoughts that should be promoted with pride, but more importantly, should also be understood, maintained, and employed towards maintaining a just society… “
Being that the First Amendment protects religion, it should be noted that it also guarantees that government cannot endorse any specific religion over another, or at all. Justice Hugo Black clarified this in a 1947 case, citing Thomas Jefferson on the proper interpretation. It is imperative that this point be remembered, as humans have a tendency for group-think or mob-rule, since a large number of the American population are Christian and would love to see their religious views being made law. Mob-rule or Majority Rules mentality smothers the individual at the whims of the herd. The United States, being a pluralist nation with a secular government, cannot allow such a thing to happen or we will quickly be back in the Dark Ages.
I cannot overstress the importance of Satanists knowing their civil rights and fighting for them when and where they may be infringed upon. After all, Satanism, as LaVey put it, does stand for Active Opposition. We must, therefore, always stand up for our civil rights—and civil rights in general—because once one groups civil rights are taken away, others will follow, and it won’t be long until they go after their old enemy, the Devil.
The United States of America was founded by revolutionaries fleeing religious oppression. Many of our Founding Fathers were not Christian. The Treaty of Tripoli made it clear that, “ … the Government of the United States of America is not, in any sense, founded on the Christian religion … “ This nation was founded on the principles of Liberty, Freedom, and Justice—all thoroughly Satanic principles. Let’s keep vigilant and informed, so we can keep it that way!
